How to Play Zerg in Starcraft II

    1Zerg Buildings

The zergs will have two particularities, the first will be to develop you exclusively on mucus, requiring tumors placed by your Queens as well as the Incubator and the second particularity will be that your troops will be exclusively created via your larvae (excluding mutation and Queens), it you will therefore have to choose between creating drones or units. The rest of this tutorial dedicated to zergs will explain in detail what each building is for.

    Tier 1 Zerg Building

Incubator: main building generating larvae (three in number) at regular intervals. You can then build Queens via this incubator which will increase the number of larvae and can develop your mucus, as we will detail in the "Units" section.

Extractor: Like the Refinery and Assimilation, you'll need to land an Extractor on Vespene Gas in order to harvest it. Don't forget that a drone will have to mutate into a building, which will reduce your number of harvesters at the start of the game.

Gene Pool and Evolution Chamber: the first offensive building in the game. Once built, you can then create Zerglings as well as Queens. The evolution room as its name suggests will allow you to increase the power of your units.

    Tier 2 Zerg Building

Terrier : after building your Gene Pool, you will be able to reach Tier 2 of the Zerg race. Unlike other races, the Zerg will have to improve their main building so that it can touch new "technologies". After building a Burrow, you can then create a Cockroach Burrow or a Baneling Nest.

Cockroach Burrow and Baneling Nest: this building will allow you to create cockroaches, a very powerful unit but cannot attack in the air. For its part, the Baneling Nest will allow you to transform your zerglings into banelings, explosive "kamikaze" type units crashing into an enemy group or nearby buildings inflicting area damage.

Creeping Spore Spore and Creeping Stinger: Unlike photons, zerg defensive buildings can only deal damage in the air (spore eaters) or on the ground (stinger). They can then dig themselves out and position themselves elsewhere in order to advance little by little on the creep. Like all buildings, if this one is no longer supplied with creep once positioned, its hit points will dominate until it eventually dies.

Fosse d'infestation: will allow you to create "magic" type units with the infestors as well as the swarmers. You will be required to create this building if you want to evolve your Burrow into a Hive in order to reach Tier 3 of the zergs.

Hydralisk Lair and Nydus Network: the hydralisks lair will allow you to create hydralisks as the name suggests. The Nydus Network has created a "shortcut" on the map allowing you to quickly move your troops from one hatchery to another or to rush directly to the enemy base before it destroys the Nydus exit door . Like the Aiguillon rush, this strategy is not recommended because it is too random and will not allow you to improve in the long term.

Needle : this building will allow you to create aerial units and can subsequently mutate into a large needle after having built your Hive (Tier 3). The multalisk harass will be advised against your opponents in order to develop quickly without the enemy being able to destroy your bases because of the mutalisks.

    Tier 3 Zerg Building

Hive: the final stage of the Incubator allowing you access to the last zerg units in the game. You can then create ultralisks and modify your needle in order to create a large needle.

Ultralisk Cavern and Great Needle: allows you to create ultralisks. The Great Needle will unlock the Vermin Lord. To do this, you will need to create these corrupters who can then transform. At the end of the game, the alliance Corruptor against air units and Lord-Vermin against ground units will cause havoc.

    2Zerg units

One of the peculiarities of the Zerg race will be that no supply depots will have to be built. Dominants will allow you to increase the number of your troops. Your Dominants will be able to move and then mutate into Vigilant as our tutorial below will explain.

How to Play Zerg in Starcraft II

    Tier 1 Zerg Units

Drone : this is the basic unit of the zergs which will be used to harvest ores, vespene gas and above all to mutate into buildings, allowing you to build new bases and constructions allowing you to develop. Be careful, however, because all the buildings (excluding the incubator) must be built on mucus.

Dominant : unlike the other races in the game, the zerg will have to increase its population by making dominants, a flying unit requiring no supply depot and able to move in order to scan the surroundings or even spy on its enemy. Once the Burrow is reached, the Dominant can then mutate into Vigilant. Finally, the dominant will be able to pour mucus in order to facilitate the speed of your troops, increase their regeneration or simply prevent the enemy's base capture. The Dominant will also be able to increase its speed and become a means of air transport for your troops.

Queen : one of the most important Zerg units. The Queen will indeed allow you to heal your units and buildings but will also be able to increase your mucus and the number of larvae that your incubator will produce. Finally, the Queen will be a very good defensive unit at the start of the game because she will be able to defend your base against units on the ground but also in the air!

Zergling then Banelings: the zergling will be the base unit of the zerg. Subsequently, these little critters can become extremely powerful between improving their speed, attack as well as their damage and shell. Once Baneling Nest is complete, Zerglings will have the ability to mutate into Banelings. Banelings will be “Kamikaze” type units, exploding in close combat against buildings and/or units inflicting large area damage. This unit will be particularly effective against light units such as marines or harvesters.

Cockroaches: once the unit upgrades are complete, you can burrow it like all Zerg ground units. You will then quickly regain life points but you can also move your army to enter the enemy's base directly or bury yourself without being attacked. In addition, the cockroach is a very powerful heavy unit in the early game, so should not be neglected.

Hydralisk : a unit with huge DPS (damage per second) but quite fragile against most opposing units. You will therefore have to leave the hydralisks in the background behind cockroaches and/or zerglings. While the cockroaches will be attacked, the hydralisk can then decimate the opposing army, and can also shoot at flying units.

    Tier 2 Zerg Units

Vigilant : once the Burrow is reached, you can turn your Dominants into Vigilant. This unit will be able to create Changelings, taking the form of opposing units and thus being able to spy on the enemy if they do not notice your changeling. In addition, the Vigilant will be able to detect invisible units, so you will always need to have one in your army to avoid Ghost or Dark Templar attacks.

Mutalisk: a unit used to temporize during the middle-game. When you start to grow, you will need to create a small group of mutalisks causing trouble in the opposing main base. While the opponent is busy fighting your troops, you can then throw your B3 or even B4 and quickly move the slime on the map. Mutalisks can also be used to kill isolated groups on the map and to visualize the opponent's strategy via the great speed of the unit.

Corruptor: The Corruptor is a flying unit capable of simply shooting in the air and doing a lot of damage to heavy flying units like the Battlecruiser or the Carrier. Thereafter, the corrupter can transform into Lord-vermin, once Tier 3 is reached.

Swarmer: certainly the most deceitful unit in the game with the Phantom of the Terrans. The swarmer will have to bury itself in order to launch pests attacking the adversary. This "Siege" type unit will be particularly difficult to face because it will be far from the battlefields and above all invisible once buried. You will therefore have to rely on your Banelings, Archons or Tormentors to dislodge them.

Infestor: Sentinel-style magic-type unit. The infestor will be able to produce infested terrans in order to launch a quick push on the opposing base or to defend themselves. In addition, Infestors will be able to take control of enemy units and launch fungal growths intended to stop the units in their movements and inflict damage at the same time.

    Tier 3 Zerg Units

Ultralight: imposing armored monster making area attacks. The ultralisk can only be built at the very end of the game but will be formidable against ground units. However, you will have to rely on many zerglings and/or hydralisks to attack air units that cannot be hit by the beast. Don't forget that the zerg must be played in microphone. You will have to take as many bases as possible and create units in waves until you end up suffocating your opponent, which the zerglings associated with the ultralisks will do perfectly.

Viper: very special unit countering mainly Protoss troops with Colossi and Terranes with Tanks. This unit will indeed be able to attract these enemies and kill them one by one, forcing the opponent to turn back or fight without their heavy units. Leech will allow you to quickly recover magicka and Blinding Cloud to attack ranged units in melee without losing a single unit.

Vermin Lord: definitely the strongest zerg unit. To create it, you will first need to create Corruptors and transform them. The cost will be relatively high but the Vermin Lord will fight far enough throwing his vermin and can quickly be healed by the Queens in your army. All combined with a few corrupters, your army will then become unbeatable if well managed.

    3Starting a Zerg Game

Are you familiar with zerg units and buildings? Our tutorial will now look at the early game of this race. At first, you will have to harvest minerals with your drones, as for the Protoss and Terrans.

    Classic "Hatch first" start:

    • Drone creation up to 9/10
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Drone creation up to 15/18
    • Creation of an incubator
    • Creation of drones 17/18
    • Creating an extractor
    • Creation of a gene pool
    • Creation of drones 17/18
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Creation of drones 22/26
    • Creation of two queens
    • Start Metabolic Boost
    • Creation of drones 26/28
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Creation of drones 28/28
    • Create two pairs of zerglings
    • Creation of a new hatchery
    • Creation of drones 30/36
    • Create two pairs of zerglings

This classic build order for the zergs will allow you to start your game off right by quickly collecting ore on your second base and staying alert if you are attacked. In this case, you will have to stop creating drones and start producing zerglings directly. Otherwise, launch your third Hatchery, which will put you in very good condition to win your game.

    Départ push "Mass Roach" :

    • Drone creation up to 9/10
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Drone creation up to 15/18
    • Creation of a gene pool
    • Creation of an incubator
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Creation of drones 17/18
    • Creation of a queen
    • Creation of drones 24/26
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Creation of drones 33/36
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Creation of drones 36/38
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Creation of drones 45/46
    • Zergling Creation
    • Creation of two extractors
    • Creation of drones 49/54
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Creation of drones 54/54
    • Creation of a dominant
    • Modification of the brooder in burrow
    • Creation of drones 62/70
    • Creation of the Cockroach Burrow
    • Creation of an evolution chamber

This strategy will be particularly effective against Protoss and should be modified to play with mutalisks if you are playing against a Terran. This aggressive strategy will allow you to engage well from the start of the game and then be able to take a B3 if your attack has caused some damage to your opponent. This tactic will be recommended if you see your opponent taking their B2 early in the game.

    Start rush "6 glings":

    • Drone creation up to 6/10
    • Creation of a generic pool
    • Drone creation up to 7/10
    • Create 6 Zerglings
    • Creation of drones 10/10
    • Creating a Dominant
    • Creation of drones 12/18
    • Creation of a Queen

All you have to do then is create zerglings without stopping while injecting larvae with your Queen. As for the Photon Rush, this strategy will be particularly inadvisable if you want to progress and not simply obtain easy victories until you stumble in a league that will no longer be fooled by this kind of strategy.
